Freedom Fighters, the shortest and simplest song on Todd Rundgren’s first ‘Utopia’ project, is a true anthem for all those that try to think out of the box, Seekers for Truth, and those who are committed to improving themselves and the world.
With relatively straightforward lyrics, this song makes some poignant and deep observations to meditate on, and some personal questions Seekers should be asking within. Along with this, it helps to inspire in times of seeming defeat and struggle.
‘Freedom Fighters’ is about the war for hearts and minds, including your own. It recognizes that the only lasting and successful revolution (and ‘utopia’) is within… and it will be won… “(It’s just a question of how and when)â€â€¦.
The rest of the album is just as good, but may not be recommended for all as the remaining songs are much longer and more complex. But if you like this kind of thing and Todd Rundgren in particular, Utopia’s follow up studio album ‘Ra’ is my personal favorite.

Todd Rundgren’s Utopia - Freedom Fighters
Tucked away in the darkest cupboard of your heart,
There’s a feeling you can’t let out.
In a way, you are just a soldier of the mind
You are marching, what are you marching about?
On your mark, now get set
Get back on your feet
We ain’t down yet
You know we will get it
So don’t you forget
That the world rolls on.
Your reward will come
(it’s just a question of how and when)
Look around, everyone is wondering where it’s at
Do you wonder, or do you know?
Clap your hands! Raise your voice!
Some people will hide
They can’t stand the noise
But we’re freedom fighters
And we’ve got no choice.
But the world rolls on
And the truth will come
(I can’t believe my eyes)
And the change will come
(it’s just a question of how and when)
In a way, you are just a soldier of the mind
In a way, you are just a soldier of the mind
On your marks, now get set
Get back on your feet
We ain’t down yet
We’re all freedom fighters
And don’t you forget
But the world rolls on
(I can’t believe my eyes)
Your reward will come
(it’s just a question of how and when)
And the truth will come
(it’s just a question of how and when)
And the change will come
(it’s just a question of how and when)
